Unleash your inner Thor (Avengers Endgame) with the Setesdal Cardigan!

Not all superheroes wear capes - they wear Norwegian cardigans! The definitive proof comes in the form of the latest incarnation of Thor in Marvel Studio’s Avengers: Endgame. The Asgardian superhero may not be at his best when we catch up with him, grappling with past failures, but his cozy knitwear is a brilliant nod to the character’s Norse origins.

Thor is wearing a Setesdal cardigan, one of the most historical Norwegian knitting patterns. Setesdal is actually the name of district of southern Norway, known for its traditional farming and folk culture. The beautiful embroidery around the neck and down the front of the cardigan is directly inspired by rosemåling (rose painting), a form of decoration that originated in the areas around Setesdal.

Made from Norwegian wool to an intricate design, the cardigan is perfect for cozying up on the sofa, or for bracing winter walks. Stylised pewter clasps add a further touch of elegance.

The Setesdal cardigan is still highly popular among both men and women in Norway today, not only as a marker of regional identity, but also as a showcase of the best of Norwegian culture and tradition. It is only fitting that Thor, whose character is inspired by the Norse god of the same name, would choose to lounge around in one. He fits in perfectly with the locals!

Despite the fact that Thor, in Endgame, is not in the best shape of his life, and is clearly struggling to come to terms with the past, many critics have reacted favourably to this new, more human portrayal of the superhero. Don’t have a cape, a six pack or your life completely together? Thor’s showing us that you can still be a superhero, which is surely a message that resonates with all of us. Besides, cardigans are a lot more comfortable than spandex!
